Communicate to your Audience

Communicate to your Audience!

For a Product Manager, working with different stakeholders is a common occurrence. The goals and intent of the discussions vary significantly with each stakeholder. In the 101 of presentation, the most fundamental principle is understanding the audience. This understanding is not just a skill but a testament to the value we place on our stakeholders. Therefore, it is critical for a product manager, as every minute of our day is like a presentation. We must fine-tune our message based on which stakeholder we are talking to, making them an integral part of our communication process.

Consider the range of topics a Product Manager navigates. With management, it's strategy, roadmap, planning, resourcing, costing and pricing. It's in-depth technical designs with an architect or engineer, and with a Data Scientist, it's data, prompt, AI model and metrics. A proficient PM must be able to articulate and effectively convey these diverse messages to stakeholders with equal confidence and conviction, showcasing the demand for versatile communication skills in this role.

One of the key learnings for a Product Manager is understanding what and how to speak to a target audience. This knowledge is not just a part of your role but a significant part that can immensely impact your effectiveness as a PM. It underscores the importance of your role in the communication process and the influence you can have on the team's success. Your effective communication is a key factor in the team's success, making you feel responsible and motivated.
